About
G. M. Donley's creative pursuits have long followed parallel, sometimes intertwining visual and verbal threads of photographic art, writing, editing, and graphic design. He worked at the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1991 to 2021, in roles related to design and publishing including managing creative services and designing and editing the museum magazine for more than 20 years. A graduate of Oberlin College, he later earned an MS in urban studies at Cleveland State University.

Since settling in Cleveland Heights in the late 1980s, he has been active as a freelance writer, designer, and artist in photo-based art, including exhibitions at William Busta Gallery and Foothill Galleries. A founding member and two-time past president of the nonprofit Heights Arts, he currently serves as chair of that organization's exhibition community team, which reviews artist submissions, curates exhibitions, and installs shows in the Heights Arts gallery on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights.

For his ongoing photographic project Place/Time, he creates strongly horizontal composite images (typically 6 to 8 feet wide) that render the experience of being in or moving through a space over time, sometimes including annotations relating to the meanings people might associate with particular sites. The subject matter ranges from Cleveland-area locations to dramatic landscapes in spectacular places to commissioned images around specific client projects.
