There
is nothing like experiencing live music in person, and Cleveland is a
great place for it. These pictures celebrate that scene, or a part of
it, anyway—I'm not sure it would be appropriate to shoulder my way
among the musicians in the middle of a Cleveland Orchestra concert, a
Commodore Perry IPA in one hand and a camera in the other. That's no
criticism of the orchestra. The full Cleveland experience requires hearing the Cleveland Orchestra. But this project is about something messier, darker, noisier—and equally distinguished in its way. Because the full Cleveland experience also means going to the Beachland Ballroom or the Grog Shop, or that prototype upon which all badly lit bars in decrepit wood frame buildings next to chemical tanks and huge piles of recycled glass are based, Pat's in the Flats. You don't have to go hear expensive national acts. You don't have to spring for top-shelf microbrew (except for Commodore Perry). A local band and a couple PBRs will do just fine. Just go. ––———
Still photographs don't really convey the sound and the motion, and videos require too much attention span. These pictures are composites of three or four images made over the course of a few seconds up to maybe a minute or two, layered up and melded together to try to make something that gets across the blurry noisy nightclub experience. They fall short, of course. You really have to be there. |
